Important reminder about pets in Community Safe Rooms

Posted Date: 04/27/26 (10:04 AM)

Eagle Nation,

Thank you to the many families who utilized our Community Safe Rooms during last night’s storms. We are grateful to be able to provide a safe space for our community during severe weather.

As part of our standard process following weather events, district administrators are reviewing our procedures to ensure we continue to operate as safely and efficiently as possible.

One concern observed last night was the number of pets brought into shelters without appropriate containment. We understand and respect the desire to keep pets safe during emergencies. However, for the safety of all occupants, including other animals, all pets must be secured in airline-approved carriers while inside Community Safe Rooms.

In several locations, a large number of animals were present, and many were not properly contained. In crowded, loud, high-stress environments, unrestrained animals - no matter how well-behaved in normal circumstances - can pose a risk to others and create liability issues. When pets are not properly contained, it can also create tense situations for our safe room staff, who are often serving in a volunteer capacity, and may feel pressured to make difficult, on-the-spot decisions in order to keep the environment calm and moving efficiently.

We ask that families plan ahead by obtaining an appropriate carrier if they anticipate bringing a pet to a Community Safe Room in the future. Your cooperation helps ensure these spaces remain safe and accessible for everyone. For more information about Community Safe Room locations and procedures, please visit our website.

Thank you for your understanding and partnership.
